Many people feel the US has anywhere from 5,00-10,000 tigers, so that would easily be more than the wild population. As far as other exotic cats, I am not sure if any captive population is larger than the wild. Keep in mind most tigers are NOT at accredited zoos or rescues, but at places/people with a simple USDA permit.

this arguement is often used. . ban dogs, horses, cows, bees etc. . as they kill more people a year than pet tigers. It isn't about the ratio of pet tiger attacks per owner, it is about them fueling a trade that is illegal, about the poor welfare conditions seen, about the attention they draw away from serious conservation, about the poor genetic diversity, and the list can go on and on and on. . .

There are lots of tigers being kept in captivity, yet tiger attacks are not very common. If house cats were as large as tigers, people would be dying left and right. Yes, sometimes they injure their owners, but not with anymore intent than a house cat does when it gets pissed at you for whatever reason. Dogs flip out and bite/maul humans every day. Around 20 people are killed by them a year, usually by the "family dog. " Better ban everyone from keeping pet dogs. :(

I think it's wrong for people to be allowed to own exotic creatures like tigers! They'd be so much happier in the wild or a large enclosure. How on earth can they possibly live with the fact that they're treating these beautiful creatures terribly?!

This is a mean sorry thing to do to the tigers. I love tigers. This is mistreatment. They need to run & be wild.

@snakeguy0942 I understand your points, but being invloved with tigers for 10 years the bad with allowing the general public to own tigers/lions etc. . simply outweighs the good, and the current laws take too long to get around to actually doing something. Even those with the best intentions seem to fall on bad times and have to place their cats with already full sanctuaries. Proper conditions for a tiger is the wild, or at a facility that is supporting wild tiger conservation.

@briczar22 I think that it SHOULD be allowed but only under strict circumstances and conditions. I think that the permitting system that is in place now should be cleaned up to allow these animals to live fuller healthier lives while at the same time, allow for RESPONSIBLE and caring enthusiasts to keep them under proper conditions.

@bloodtiefangirl it is legal in several states, and in those that it isn't, it still is possible to get around the basic laws. It is a problem that only a few concern themselves with. Thanks for watching!
